OFWs, some interesting data

Most literatures say that there are between 8 to 10 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) around the world. Based on the recent data by the National Statistics Office (NSO), that data is wrong. NSO’s Survey on Overseas Filipinos (SOF), conducted in October 2010 and the result was released yesterday showed the following:

* Total number of OFWs in 2009 was 1.9 M (not 8-10 M), and 47.2 percent of them were women.

* Main destination of male OFWs were: Saudi Arabia (28.5%), UAE (13.1%), Qatar (8.1%) and Japan (6.0%).

* Main destination of female OFWs were: UAE (17.9%), Saudi Arabia (13.7%),  Hong Kong (11.1%), and Singapore (7.8%).

* Total remittances in 2009 were P138.5 billion and average remittance per person was P83,000.  A year before that, 2008, total remittances were P141.9 billion and average remittance was the same at P83,000 per person.
